Finally, my high school class is having a 10 year reunion. We never had our 5 year reunion, and I thought that we wouldn’t be having this one either, since it’s almost November. I am very excited to see who will show up that I haven’t seen in a while. Although, many of my friends were older or younger than me, so they didn’t graduate in my class. I would love to see them, but alas, their classes have their own reunions.

It’s strange that I am now friends with a lot of the people I never really talked to in high school. Back then I wasn’t too social with anyone who didn’t hang out in the “math office.” This was a great place to visit when you had a free period. It was almost like a club for the kids who didn’t fit in anywhere else. We had your smart kids, your strange kids, the drama and band geeks. And the newspaper crew. It was awesome.

I took a photograph of the window in the math office for my photography class one day and it’s one of those black and white pictures that is kind of fuzzy, yet it emits this feeling of actually being there, in the room. I love it, because I can always look at it and return to that room over and over again, where I “grew up” in a lot of ways.

I remember I used to hide under the counter sometimes and see if I could eavesdrop on conversations. I actually heard people talking about me once. I was also good at pretending to be asleep when I actually was very wide awake.

Life was so simple then, no children whining for chocolate milk or husbands wanting you to cook dinner. No job that demanded more time from you than your family or hobbies. A lot of people say that they would never go back to high school, but I think I would like to go back, if only to get a chance to see all my old friends again, as adults, and talk to them about life.

My reunion will give me a chance to do this. But not with all the people I used to now. I only hope that one day I can visit with all my math office friends, just to see where the road of life has taken them. I’m sure we’ve all changed since those days.
