I tend to go through phases in my life, where I do a lot of one thing, and less of another. Recently, I’ve been in a knitting phase, creating new patterns for scarves and trying to organize myself to launch my own brand. Last summer, I was all about writing my book. I still want and desire to write my book, but the motivation to do so has diminished a bit. I don’t know why, or where it went, but it’s just not as prevalent to me as knitting.
This got me thinking about what motivates us, as people, to do anything. Is it an idea that gets us into a certain frame of mind to do things? Sometimes. Or is it something that we just feel we need to do, at that moment, to make us feel more alive and worthwhile? When I was younger, I read books constantly. Now, not so much. I wish I had the time to read more, and I keep buying books I want to read, but they end up sitting in stacks or on shelves, waiting for me to open them. My motivation to read is lessened, but my need to acquire books to read has not.
I believe that one has to be passionate about something in order to want to do it. I’ve been thinking about starting my own line of knitwear and my own brand, in order to make some money on a hobby that I enjoy and wish to share with the world. I’m finally at a point where it seems plausible to do so. So my passion lies in that which is most attainable to me.
My passion is also there for my writing, hence me writing this blog. But my writing will always be there for me. My story is not going to fly away. If anything, I need more time to think about how I want to write it, and what I still need to write. Words are my comfort, my safe place. I would be lost without them.
The phases of my life are constantly changing, as I grow passionate about one thing, then another. It’s important to find the things that you are passionate about. The things that drive you. These are the things that define you, that lead you to where you’re supposed to be in life. Follow your passion and you will be happy. Because you will be doing things that you like to do, that you want to do, that fulfill you. Why fill your days with things that mean nothing when you can be doing things that you enjoy.
Here’s some homework for you. Think about what motivates you. And the things you are motivated to do. Is there a trend? Do you tend to do certain things in certain times of your life, in certain seasons? Do certain people motivate you more than others?
Know yourself and what you like to do, and why you do it. You’ll be a much happier and healthier person as a result.
