When we first bought our house a little more than a year ago, I couldn’t wait to start using the attic as my studio for writing and being creative. It’s not a finished attic by any means, but it does have windows that close, and you can fully stand up in it. It’s like a bonus room at the top of the house, where no one can bother me. Despite the fact that wasps somehow manage to get in, and it’s insanely hot or cold (depending on the outside weather), I continue to make my way up there most nights, in search of some peace and quiet, if not for anything else.

My sole purpose in using the attic as my writing studio was for me to write my book. My downfall was putting a television with cable up there. Although I have done some good writing up there, I admit I sometimes just spend my time sitting in my nana’s old orange-upholstered chair, with the cat on my lap, watching Doctor Who or House Hunters.

I can’t go anywhere in the house without the cat finding me.

In the past few months we’ve been cleaning out the attic, so that we can get rid of a bunch of stuff. And so I’m rethinking how I’m going to lay out my space. I currently have a desk with lots of shelves loaded with knitting books and yarn. And I have lots of yarn. Crazy insane amounts of yarn.

I also have a table set up so that I can potentially do crafty stuff on it. Not right now, because it’s cluttered with everything under the sun. But eventually.

And as I look at my space, I start to think about my choice of a desk chair. I used to have your common variety desk chair, with the wheels and the padded seat. I’ve had a couple actually. I never really enjoyed sitting in them though. It’s probably why I got rid of them in favor of the old vintage chair I use now.

But the problem with this chair is that it sits too low to actually use at the desk. I placed it near the desk, but I can’t sit back in the chair and sit up to the desk at the same time. It’s physically impossible. The chair is low and sits way back. It’s a very comfortable chair, and I’m going to relocate it as my lounge chair in the attic. But only after I find an alternative desk chair to put in its place.

I can’t use just any old chair. I want it to have style, and charm. I want it to tell a story. It has to have history. I love antique furniture, and now I actually have a place to put some nice furniture.  So now I must make a quest for the perfect vintage desk chair.

One might ask, why not reuse another chair in the house? Perhaps. I do have a nice armchair, also from my nana’s house, that could work. But it might also be too big. Also, it doesn’t have wheels, and would be difficult to move whenever I wanted to get in or out of it.

I’m thinking of checking out some antique stores and flea markets soon, in hopes of finding that one perfect chair. I saw a nice set of wooden chairs at the flea market a few weeks ago, with green velvet cushions. They were sweet. But a little too low for my desk.

I think this quest may take a while to complete.

I’m just happy that I finally have a room of my own. I go up there sometimes when it rains so I can sit and listen to the rain drops fall onto the roof. It’s the most relaxing sound. It doesn’t often last long, as the children screaming at one another usually ends up making its way up the attic stairs at some point. But for those precious moments when they are being civil with each other, or have passed out for the night, I can actually hear myself think clearly.

And that is awesome.
