There are certain movies that make me stop what I’m doing just to watch them. If they’re on TV, I’ll stop to watch, even though it’s a movie I’ve already seen many times, and even own. King Kong is one of those films, in part because Adrian Brody is amazing and handsome, but mostly because I love the story behind it. What I feel is the main idea of the film is beauty. Beauty tamed the beast, and brought on his demise. The scene where Naomi Watts and King Kong are on the clifftop, watching the sunset, is one of those moments in film that makes you think about beauty, and all that you find beautiful. At least, I do. Things like a sunset are beautiful, and they happen every day, but not a lot of people stop to look at them and appreciate the beauty of a sunset. I think that’s sad when people are so busy and preoccupied that they miss out on the tiny details.
This idea of beauty can also be applied to people. If you don’t stop to take a look at people, and all the tiny details that make them them, you’re bound to miss out on a person’s true beauty. You’ll miss that glint of yellow in their eyes, or the way they laugh like no other. You’re not going to see when they need a hug, or when they’ve been so touched by someone else that they are about to cry. If you tune into the tiny details, emotions, movements, and language of other people, you’ll see that there is beauty in almost everything.
I’m not saying that everyone is gorgeous, or attractive, because that is something entirely different. But beauty, that’s something that everyone can attain at one point in their life. We all can be beautiful, in our unique way, even though we may not realize it.
And moments can be beautiful as well. I’ve had several moments in my life that can be considered beautiful, and that I still remember fondly. A few of the most recent ones include a porch step with a glass of wine and cheese, looking into my daughter’s eyes, waking up in bed with everything I love, including the cat, and the chemistry of talking with friends who really get you, and understand you, and continue to want to be there for you. No matter what.
Every moment of every day has the potential to contain beauty, and if we move too quickly, we can miss it. But if we stop and take the time to look around us, we’ll see that beauty.
Getting back to King Kong…He saw beauty, and it made him vulnerable. So vulnerable he became captivated by it, as well as being held captive. He died for beauty, in the end. If you look beyond the fact that this is a film, and it’s just a story, there is a lesson to be learned. You can find beauty, and embrace it, but you must also watch your back at all times and not lose track of who you are, or the world will do you in. Keep perspective at all times. Even though you might see the beauty of something, you don’t have to own it to keep it in your heart. You just have to know what it is, and remember. And know that it will always live in your mind, if not in life. And if you can’t wake up and look at it every day, it’s still there.
