On my way home today, I started thinking about food. I was wondering why some hamburgers are round, while others are square. Wendy’s and White Castle prefer to make square burgers, while McDonalds and others use the round version. I really don’t have a preference, but I got to thinking that maybe the shape has more of an impact on the burger than I had believed.
A square burger is usually placed on a square bun. Using a square bun would seem the best option for any burger, as you would have more space for other stuff, like lettuce, tomatoes, and condiments. I always have problems with round buns and burgers. No matter how I eat them, there is always more burger left than bun. Even when you line up the bun and the burger on a round burger, you can never get equal amounts of both in your mouth at the same time.
I can’t recall having this problem with a square burger. But then it could also be influenced by the sloppy way in which most burgers are prepared and served to you. I’ve found many with the burger half-hanging off the bun. Not a pleasant site.
After contemplating all this, I thought about other foods that could be round or square. There’s the bagel (which does work both ways), the cookie, and the pizza. Then I started thinking about the donut. Has anyone ever seen a square donut? It got me wondering if a recipe for one even exists. I want to make a square donut, just to see if it can be done. I can’t recall if I’ve ever heard of one. Maybe you can’t make square shapes while frying. It could prove to be very difficult. We’ll see.
I’ll let you know if the elusive square donut can be found (or made).
